Valtteri Bottas has taken his 1st F1 victory in Sochi, the Russian F1 race. Bottas who qualified in third place ahead of team mate Lewis Hamilton.
Bottas made the perfect start and took the lead ahead of both Ferrari’s into turn one. The long approach to turn one, 1KM, was enough to see the powerful Mercedes ahead.
Bottas drove the near perfect race, only making one real mistake, locking both front tyres. Composing himself, he managed the gap to the advances of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Vettel’s strategy was to pit later than Bottas which gave the German fresher tyres at the latter stage of the Grand Prix.
Vettel put the struggling Mercedes under severe pressure for the last 4 laps, getting into the DRS zone for the first time in the 52 lap race.
It came down to the wire with Bottas being the 107’th different driver to win an F1 Grand Prix and the fifth Finnish driver to achieve that result. Vettel finished under the gearbox of the Mercedes to take second place. Kimi Raikkonen took the third place on the podium. Lewis Hamilton struggled throughout the race to finish a distance 4th.
