The Irish Supercar Championship powered by Pirelli have teamed up with the Special Needs Fun Centre and will be carrying out bucket collections during the race weekend to raise much needed funds. The Irish Supercar drivers and teams will also be competing in a ‘Wheelchair Race’ on the main straight during the lunch break. Drivers will be ‘suited and booted’ and will compete against each other in the wheelchair race which we can guarantee will be fun to watch at the very least!

The first race weekend for the Irish Supercars sees many of last years drivers returning to the grid, with the addition of new drivers. It will be interesting to see how the addition of the new Drenth gearbox performs, with Barry Hallion and Peter Barrable the first to test it under race conditions. Seasoned racers Keith Dawson and Robbie Parks will both be joining the grid this year. It will be exciting to see how the two get on in what is already an extremely competitive championship. Alistair Kellett, who last year ran Barry Hallion, has expanded his team this year with the addition of Keith Dawson and we are looking forward to seeing how Kellett Motorsport performs throughout the year. Unfortunately Barry Hallion was out of the championship last year, a problem which has been resolved with the change to Drenth gearboxes.

Alan Dawson returns to the grid with Sean Woods Racing running him for the second year in a row. It will be interesting to see how the Dawson’s pair off, with both family menacers being run under different teams. Robbie Parks of Vertical Racing makes his return to racing this season, making the switch from running Formula Sheane’s, after joining the grid for last year’s race in Brands Hatch.

The ASK Racing team have a number of drivers on the grid this year. Last year’s championship contender, Peter Barrable continues his assault with the team alongside Bob Cameron and Philip Jones. Ray Finnegan will also be driving an ASK Racing owned car throughout the season.

The battle between Kellett Motorsport, ASK Racing, Vertical Racing and Sean Woods Racing will commence on April 9th and we’re sure we will see the drivers stake their claim for the championship title. With some testing set to take place by interested drivers from other classes, we expect to be announcing more championship contenders in the days leading up to the first race.

This news comes after the Irish Supercar Championship announced in December that Pirelli have come on board as title sponsor for the class as part of a two year deal. A huge step forward in image and driver quality has resulted in this championship rising in interest and stature. With many of last year’s sponsors staying on board, mainly Keogh’s Crisps, Dublin Crystal and Monsoon Estates Coffee, the Irish Supercar Championship will have a suite overlooking the main straight for every race weekend in Mondello Park. The Irish Supercars suite will be open to visitors during their charity race weekend who can enjoy complimentary Keogh’s Crisps and Monsoon Estates Coffee whilst watching the racing.

The Special Needs Fun Centre aim to provide the first ever Fun Centre in Ireland where parents/ guardians, carers, families and different organisations can bring children and young adults to have FUN, engage with others with similar needs and allow them develop at their own pace in comfortable and safe surroundings. There’s no facility like this in Ireland or in Europe. No one child or adult is the same as the next, every person is unique in their own way. They, and their families, deserve a place that will account for different needs and personal preferences. The Irish Supercar Championship understand the need for such a facility and are proud to be supporting such a unique charity which aim to bring joy and fun to the lives of children and young adults with special needs and disabilities.
